My brother and I went to put some flowers and a wreath on our parents’ grave at Fulford Cemetery. I was more than shocked to discover the state of the pathways at the cemetery. They were like skating rinks and extremely dangerous.

At this time of the year, the cemetery is busy, as many people pay their respects to their lost loved ones and it is disgusting that such little consideration has been paid by those who should make those places safe.

They could argue of course, that we should not venture there with such adverse weather conditions, but Christmas is a time we remember those we have lost. Also, December 23 was the anniversary of my late father’s death, so along with Christmas we had another reason to pay our visit.

It was hazardous to say the least, and to make it as safe as possible we were walking over many graves, as the grass was safer than the paths.

However, the path from filling the watering can to get to my parent’s grave was a skating rink.

I saw many others also struggling. What if I or any of the many others had fallen? Surely it is better to grit these pathways than face accident/injury claims for lack of care.

I find it very hard to understand why such a public place has not been made safe.

If I had fallen – which I came very close to doing – I most certainly would have sued, and I am not someone who would do so normally.
