I noted from The Press (UK & World News, December 29) that the Metropolitan Police and the City of London Police force enjoy free rail travel on trains within a 70-mile radius of the capital, even while off duty, at a cost of £107 million to the taxpayer over the next five years.
Although I believe the police do an excellent job, I fail to see the connection that justifies this “perk” at the expense of you and I, the taxpayer.
What about other worthy occupations, eg the other emergency services, charity workers, health workers, etc? Why the police? The £107 million of our money would be better spent if pumped into either the health service or education sector improvements.
