POLICE have been dealing with dozens of road accidents across York and North Yorkshire, as the wintry weather wreaks havoc.

North Yorkshire Police dealt with more than 50 “damage-only” accidents and 20 “minor or serious” crashes on Saturday alone.

The total number is three times that recorded last weekend.

A force spokesman said today: “Heavy snowfall and sub-zero conditions have had a major impact on roads right across the force area.”

Police also dealt with more than 50 reports of “highway disruption” on Saturday, with many vehicles getting stuck.

Emergency services also reported difficulties getting to incidents across, particularly in more remote parts of the county.

So far today, police have been called to four minor collisions and 15 reports of highway disruption. Main routes are currently clear and traffic is said to be lighter than yesterday.

But the spokesman warned: “With the current weather conditions set to continue into next week, we again advise people to be extra cautious and only make journeys if they are absolutely necessary.

“If you have to drive, make sure you leave plenty of time for your journey. Drive slowly and according to the road conditions, and leave a large distance between you and the vehicle in front.”

Motorists are also advised to carry a fully charged and useable mobile phone, warm clothing, a blanket, extra footwear and a flask of a hot drink and some food, in case they get stuck in snow.
