IT has already won one top local award – now it could be in line for a second.

The Swan Inn in Bishopgate Street, just outside York’s Bar Walls, has been nominated for “best real ale pub” in The Press Pub Awards 2009/10, putting it in the running for one of our seven gongs.

It follows its recognition earlier this year by the York branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), which voted it the pub the best in York.

The latest nomination came from Press reader and regular letter-writer Bob Waite, of Windmill Rise in Holgate, who praised the pub’s staff.

He said: “Since taking over the pub Paul Crossman, the landlord, and Kerry Brown, manager, always greet with a smile on their faces and are ready to serve up any of the excellent beers on tap.

“Real ale is a bit of an art to master, but with these two behind the bar there is never a problem and I have never had cause to complain yet about any beer on offer.

“This is probably why the pub is so busy amid this downturn of Britain’s economy.”

Mr Crossman, who took over the pub in September 2007, said winning CAMRA’s award had been a great honour and said: “It’s very nice to be nominated for something else as well.”

Our awards were launched last month and have led to nominations for scores of pubs across our patch.

There is still plenty of time for you to get your votes in, for any one or more of the categories listed here.

To make a nomination, complete the entry form or email gavin.aitchison@thepress.co.uk – be sure to include your name and contact details (phone or email) as well as the name of the pub you are nominating, and your reasons.
