POLICE forces are stepping up their fight against drink and drug drivers in the run-up to Christmas.

In an attempt to beat the scourge of the festive season, officers across North Yorkshire are increasing the use of roadside breath tests and raise awareness of the risks of motoring while under the influence.

Over the past seven days over 800 breath tests have been carried out and 25 people have arrested for drink or drug driving - 15 of which have appeared before court.

Chief Superintendent Andy McMillan, of North Yorkshire Police's Head of Operations, said: "By getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol, individuals are literally playing Russian Roulette with their own and other people's lives.

“Yes, they will have to face up to a heavy fine, public shame and the impact a road ban will have on their day to day existence.

“But ultimately, individuals should think themselves extremely lucky that they will only face a court room and not a bereaved family.

"We want everyone to have a happy, safe and peaceful Christmas and New Year however for those people who are arrogant enough to think they are above the law, our campaign sends a clear message that you will be caught and prosecuted."

Those stopped included a 32-yr-old woman from Catterick Garrison at around 7pm on December 7 allegedly found to be almost four times the legal limit. A 21-year-old man from York is also due to appear before court charged with drink driving.

He was pulled over in the Vauxhall Astra car on the A1237 in York at about 2am on December 6.
