POLICE in York are appealing for witnesses after two women were approached by a man in Fulford.

At about 9.50pm on Sunday, a woman was walking along Broadway when a man in a dark-coloured saloon or estate car pulled alongside her and offered her a lift.

He is described as being white, in his early 30’s and wearing a white baseball cap.

He persistently asked the woman to get in his car, but she refused and continued to walk along Broadway.

As she looked back to see if she was being followed she noticed the same man approaching another woman in similar circumstances.

She appeared to shout at the man and he drove off in the direction of Heslington.

PC Marie Makin, of York Police, said: “I would appeal to anyone who has been approached in this manner or saw a car matching this description in the area on Sunday night to get in touch with the police.

“I am particularly keen to speak to the second woman who has not reported the incident, but could hold information that could help us trace this man.”

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said the man in question was not believed to have any connection with the disappearance of missing 35-year-old University of York chef Claudia Lawrence.

“No link has been established with the Claudia Lawrence investigation at this time,” he said.

“However, all such incidents are the subject of further investigation and assessment.”

Although no offences have been committed police would like to determine who the man is.

Anyone with any information is urged to phone PC Makin of York Police on 0845 60 60 247.

Alternatively, Crimestoppers can be phoned anonymously on 0800 555 111.
