RESIDENTS of a village near York celebrated the countdown to the festive season by lighting up a communal Christmas tree – which they had contributed towards.
Illuminations on the 25ft tall tree, sited on the village green in Naburn, were switched on by the parish vicar, the Rev Richard Kirkman.
Residents rallied round after the village pub, the Blacksmiths Arms, launched a fundraising drive to pay for the tree and its lights.
Pub landlady Maria Taylor said the three winners from the village’s summer singing talent contest, Naburn’s Got Talent, also sang festive tunes.
She said: “About 140 people gathered together and afterwards everyone came back to the pub for mulled wine, hot chocolate and a hog roast. It was a lovely night and everyone thoroughly got in the mood.”
