THE village with the dubious honour of having the country’s worst Christmas tree has turned down an offer from a York woman to help them spruce up their seasonal decorations.

Despite being needled by criticism in national newspapers about the size of their tree, councillors in the County Durham village of Sacriston have turned down an offer from New Earswick resident Lynn Lea who is desperate to get rid of a 12-foot pine which is taking over her garden.

Mrs Lea said the Christmas tree was bought for her daughter some 15 years ago and was little more than eight inches high.

Now, however, the tree is firmly rooted and towers over Mrs Lea at more than 12 foot, and she feels the time has come to find it a new home in time for Christmas.

Going to Sacriston would be a fitting end to the tree,” she said. “I would most certainly invite them down. Mine is beautiful, it’s ten or 12 feet high and would look great.

“It’s sad to see it go because of the memories attached to it, but it’s blocking the washing line and taking up a lot of space.”

Despite the offer, a member of Sacriston Parish Council told The Press that despite the national media interest, they would be keeping their own tree.

Coun Allen Turner said: “I do appreciate the offer, but we are going to stick with our tree. We have had a few people wanting to donate to us, but this is a plan we set out to do.”

Mrs Lea, however, remains hopeful that someone will be able to use her tree, which is free to anyone who comes to take it away.
