With reference to Clive Tiney's letter complaining that Workington has got a station up in six days where Haxby has been asking for 20 years (Waiting for train, December 3). As someone who lived in Workington for more than 20 years before moving to York in 2001, and who still has family and friends in the areas of West Cumbria most affected by the recent flooding, I find his attitude unacceptable.

“Lucky” Workington is now a divided community, facing years of repairs to homes and infrastructure, and the part of the town that is without access to the main services is at least in part a disadvantaged estate. The station that has been erected so speedily is a temporary structure to enable the people from the Northside Estate (many of whom will not be car owners) to get into the town centre so that they can get to post offices and banks to collect the money that they need to live on and to visit family and friends who live on the south side of the River Derwent. I have friends and family who will benefit from this provision and would like to make it plain that while I do appreciate the frustration that he is feeling, in the circumstances I consider Mr Tiney’s choice of words to be extremely insensitive.
