RESIDENTS in a York street are being urged to sign up for a local crimefighting initiative.

Hempland Lane, in Heworth, has been without an active Neighbourhood Watch network for several years, but now North Yorkshire Police is looking to resurrect the scheme.

A letter drop was recently carried out in the area and attracted support from several residents, and Heworth police community support officer Michael Cooper is hoping more people will sign up to back the project. Police are also looking for a co-ordinator to help run Neighbourhood Watch in the area and act as a mediator between the group, the force and the Safer York Partnership.

PCSO Cooper, who is part of the Heworth Safer Neighbour-hood Team, said: “People feel less fearful of crime if there is a good community spirit and criminals feel less comfortable committing crime in such areas as they are more likely to be noticed, reported and caught.

“North Yorkshire Police will constantly support the scheme by providing regular, structured help and guidance, providing routine crime figures and other information, and offering expert advice to watch members.”

Anybody interested in joining a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in Hempland Lane should phone PCSO Cooper on 0845 6060 247 or email Michael.Cooper@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk.
