A YOUTH café could return to York city centre with the launch of a campaign on Monday to raise £60,000 to fund the project.

York Youth Council will announce on Monday that a new café, aimed at young people, will be one of two projects in the city which the council will be backing over the next 12 months.

Young people in York have been without a dedicated night-time café since the closure of the previous venue 12 months ago.

Sarah Nicholson, voice and influence co-ordinator with the youth council, said no new location had been decided upon, but the £60,000 had to be raised before the project could begin.

She said: “Young people need somewhere to go when it is cold, wet and rainy, or even when it isn’t, to socialise with friends in York.

“That is why the youth council is at the forefront of a movement to set one up in the centre of town. This café will be non-profit, free to enter café specifically for young people. The building will have other rooms which could be used for other activities in the holidays or at weekends.”

A campaign will be launched next week to raise the cash, including a plan to raise £10,000 by “paddling across Scotland”.

As well as the café, the council is also hoping to stage a youth festival in Parliament Street in June next year.
