YORK Indoor Bowls Club face a mouth-watering tie against world champion Billy Jackson’s Lincoln side in the next round of the Denny Cup after they beat Cumbrian side Copeland.

It was tough going early on as Copeland took the initiative leading 24-19 after five ends.

But by the tenth end normal service had resumed with York taking a 42-34 advantage. They did not look back, holding the lead en route to a 75-66 victory.

At home, Iain Boyle’s team got off to a flier, leading 13-2 after only eight ends. They continued to relieve the pressure from the other rinks before winning 25-11.

Phil Emmerson’s had no luck early on and found themselves 9-1 down after eight ends.

They rallied well and drew level at 9-9 on the 11th – after which the lead swapped hands four more times before they went into the 20th all level at 15-15.

York pinched a single to triumph by a single shot.

In Cumbria, Paul Mooring’s team dropped threes on the first two ends but responded well to lead 8-7.

After tying at 15-15 after 16 ends, four dropped singles put them behind before a two on the last proved significant to the overall match score.

David Stroughair’s team trailed 9-4 after five ends, but by the seventh they led 10-9.

Thereafter, the hosts had most of the rest of the match but again significantly a single then a two on the last two ends reduced the deficit to 21-17.

On Saturday, York start their Yorkshire League Division One campaign against Thornaby who cancelled their match against New Earswick last Saturday, at Thanet Road.

York face their toughest task yet in their Egham Trophy campaign when they play Cumbria on Sunday, also at Thanet Road.

New Earswick host the Yorkshire Under-18s league matches when a joint York and New Earswick team take on Selby and Thornaby.

Both days’ matches start at noon.
