CHILDREN from schools in York and North Yorkshire were involved in a musical performance at a museum in the city. The hour-long show at the National Railway Museum featured a number of original compositions inspired by the railway and performances from primary and secondary school children.
Several hundred visitors, including York MP Hugh Bayley, were also treated to a series of well-known railway favourites, such as the Thomas the Tank Engine theme tune and Ticket To Ride by The Beatles.
The performance was the result of a week of musical workshops hosted by members of the Southbank Sinfonia and Parliament Choir, which co-organised the sessions alongside public sector broadband initiative NYnet. The initiative, called Next Generation Music, enabled schools in less accessible parts of North Yorkshire to take part in the workshops via a high-speed video-link. More than 150 children from seven schools took part in the workshops.
The activity was part of a wider event celebrating the Parliament Choir’s tenth anniversary with a performance of Handel’s Messiah in York Minster last month.
