A MAJOR survey into the state of the nation’s cathedrals has revealed York Minster must carry out £8 million of repairs in the next ten years.
The English Heritage Cathedrals Fabric Condition Survey 2009 showed that almost all critical work had now been completed in English cathedrals, but York Minster still needed to carry out a major repair programme.
However, York Minster was praised in English Heritage’s new publication, Creativity and Care: New Works In English Cathedrals, for its Bedern Chapel project.
The medieval chapel, off Goodramgate, is being used as a studio for glaziers working on the Minster’s Great East Window.
The project was hailed for providing the public with an opportunity to see the skills of local glaziers at work on stained glass, while also breathing new life into a largely forgotten area of the historic Minster Close.
