Judges said they had “no hesitation” in choosing BSC Filters.

Much had changed since 1998, the glorious year when it clinched the Press’ overall Business Of The Year title – and, amazingly, it was for the better.

For one thing, it had switched its attention from the telecommunications industry – which collapsed in the early 2000s – to defence and aerospace.

Now it has become a world leader in the design and manufacture of its revolutionary microwave and radio frequency filters at its base at Jorvik House, Outgang Lane, Osbaldwick.

Steered by managing director Martyn Lee and his 50 employees, turnover this year grew by 51 per cent, from £2.92 million to £4.419 million, while net profits nearly doubled .

This reflects the fact that the company has captured 80 per cent of the UK market for its products and is expanding into Europe. This year 40 per cent of total sales were exports.
