THOUSANDS of York commuters faced a lengthy diversion this morning after flooding blocked one of the city’s main roads.
A low-lying stretch of the A19 at Fulford was closed in the early hours, with motorists from Selby and the A64 instead having to use the A1079 Hull Road to get into York.
The flooding was caused by the River Ouse rising to about 4.5 metres above normal summer levels, following heavy rain in the Pennines over the weekend.
The Environment Agency said the river levels were expected to begin falling later, but it is unclear at this stage when it will be possible to re-open the A19.
