A WOMAN has been killed and another person is seriously ill in hospital after they were hit by a car on one of North Yorkshire's busiest roads early today.

The tragedy happened at around 2.40am on the eastbound stretch of the A64 between Tadcaster and York when a silver Mercedes CLS crashed into the road's central barrier.

The vehicle was left straddling both lanes of the dual carraigeway, and when the four people travelling in it got out, the two female passengers were struck by another car.

One of them died at York Hospital, while the other was today described by North Yorkshire Police as being in "a very serious condition".

The drivers of both vehicles have since been arrested and one has been released on bail after being interviewed. The name of the woman who was killed has yet to be released.

Anybody who saw the crash or has any information about it should call Traffic Constable Richard Ellis at North Yorkshire Police's Tadcaster road policing group on 0845 6060 247.
