A SUPERB display of speed and combination punching clinched a second successive Yorkshire & Humberside crown for Clifton amateur boxer Lee Stewart.

Backed by a vociferous core of some 40-plus fans from York, the 19-year-old totally dominated his opponent Joe Wilson, of the St Paul’s Amateur Boxing Club in Hull, to win a convincing points verdict at Beverley Leisure Centre.

Wilson is a former cage-fighter who had put together an undefeated run in a new career in the boxing ring. But Stewart was impressive from first to last bell to again land the senior novices’ class of the Yorkshire Amateur Boxing Association championships, this time in the lightweight class after moving up from featherweight.

Hand-speed and several flurries of three and four-punch combinations put Stewart in control during the first round and as Wilson came forward in the second the York prospect picked him off forcing him to take a standing count of eight after a straight left hook.

Wilson had no option but to come out like a train in the third and final round and he caught Stewart with two good shots in the opening minute.

But Stewart regained his composure and command to stay at a healthier distance and score repeatedly with his jab and powerful left hooks.

Stewart, who only returned to boxing last year after an absence of six years from the sport, will fight the Midlands ABA champion in a regional final at Retford tomorrow.
