REYNOLDS of Selby was not one of the three Selby garages reported in the papers “Garages in bother over shoddy work” (The Press, November 13).

These garages received warnings from North Yorkshire Trading Standards. My advice to any motorist would be to use a garage who is a subscriber to the Motor Industry Motor Code of Practice. Motor codes garages are independently checked by the RAC, there is a written code of conduct and the garage must have qualified staff and appropriate quality control systems to be able to join the scheme. Reynolds of Selby is a member of the Motor Industry Code of Practice and would encourage all good garages to do the same.

Trading Standards don’t seem to be getting anywhere with high levels of shoddy workmanship in garages. Year after year we get the same stories about cowboy car repairs but nothing seems to be done (or suggested) to improve standards.

Surely there should be a minimum standard of competence that any mechanic should have? Why not have a registered technician scheme similar to the gas industry’s “Gas Safe Registered” scheme? Cars get MOT tested, why not test mechanics? Come on Trading Standards, action please.
