THE depleted York Acorn Under-16s cannot be too far away from that elusive win based on their performances in the last two games.

The hard-working Acorn this time lost 20-10 to Metham, a tight scoreline despite the fact the York side had only 11 players again.

Liam Mosely and Ryan Duffell ran well and a great all-round effort on behalf of all the team was capped with two tries by Danny Atkin.

Against a full squad of 17, the game will always slip away late on, when tiredness sets in and discipline slips.

“If we can attract a few more players then we will build a strong side and put few wins together,” said coach Mick Calam.

York Acorn U15s lost 20-6 to Featherstone Lions.

An early try put Acorn on the back foot and, although solid defence by Jordan Myres, Jack Griffiths and Dion Sellars set the platform for a well worked try, when good ball skills by Tom Zbeniski set up man-of-the-match Jack Burns, dodgy decisions prevented Acorn getting a foothold in the game and two 40-metre tries saw the Lions go clear.

York Acorn U13s got their season back on track after heavy defeats with a fine win at Hunslet.

Tremendous teamwork brought first-half dominance and that spirit continued in the second half despite a heavy penalty count which meant Acorn had to defend 42 consecutive tackles at one stage, which they did so without conceding, with Tom Noble ferocious in the tackle, assisted by Calum McDarby.

Reece Arthur again took the attack to the opposition, Jimmy Hardwick controlled the game at stand-off, and Jake Calam was in scintillating form at loose-forward Tries came from Jimmy Hardwick, Arthur (2), man-of-the-match Calam and Reece Rushworth.

New Earswick U12s’ winning run ended with a 20-4 loss to Kippax.

Conceding three early tries left All Blacks with too much to do, but an improved second half, especially in defence, meant they held Kippax to one try before Jim Dowthwaite charged to the corner to touch down.

Matt Chilton impressed with a high work-rate, while Will Ireland tested Kippax throughout. Centre Eoin Manson impressed again and picked up the ‘outstanding effort’ award.

Man-of-the-match Josh Rogerson scored a hat-trick and worked tirelessly in defence as Heworth U10s got back to winning ways, 38-12 at Whinmoor.

The much-improved Villagers passed the ball well in drizzly conditions.

Other tries came from Arron Mcbride, bursting through two tackles, Sam Young, ghosting over on the blind side, ‘man of steel’ Jack Shore, powering 70 metres home after breaking a tackle, and Harry Sheppeard, finally scoring after missing two chances.

Rogerson’s three all came from good teamwork, the last being the best, as Shay North darted from acting half, passed to Young, who drew two defenders before popping the ball up to Rogerson to dive between the posts. Young added goals, while Henri Grimbley was the most improved player.
