Many matches fell foul of the weather last weekend with torrential rain and howling gales seeing many local rivers burst their banks and even still waters become largely unfishable in the conditions which that wreaked havoc across the north-east.

Anglers competing in the York Amalgamation Xmas Cheer event this weekend will be hoping the gods smile on them a little more enthusiastically.

However, with further rain during the week and strong winds returning, I suspect the cheer will be in short supply.

If the fixture has to be cancelled due to the river being out of sorts then it will be rearranged and will replace the Animals Hospitals Cup on December 6.

Round four of the Yorkshire Winter League saw 72 anglers tackle the Ouse between Linton and Hunter’s Lodge.

With the river still swollen by six feet from the deluge that inundated Cumbria, fish were hard to find in the murky depths and many anglers returned home empty handed.

Wayne Shillito from Selby made his only bite of the day count to maximum effect as it was converted into a single match-winning bream of 5lb 15oz.

Pegged below the Willow Garth at Hunter’s Lodge, the victorious slab picked up a lob worm offered on the bomb.

Arthur Benstead (Barlby Village Stores) had to work slightly harder for his second-placed bag of 4lb 7oz.

Pegged in the most productive end section at Linton, he offered pole with maggot and worm in a near-side slack for a dozen roach scaling 4lb 7oz. Stan Haigh (Angler’s World Holidays) took third from peg 225 at Linton.

The Tadcaster-based veteran used a pole feeder with pinkie and worm for a bream and three roach scaling 4lb 6oz 8dm.

Sensas Wibsey won the team event, again beating their closest rivals Hirst Tackle by a single point.

With two rounds remaining the league now appears to be a two-horse race between these two.

Others: John Cyrowski (Barlby Village Stores) 3-9-0; Tony Hewson (Leeds Angling Centre) 2-15-0; Craig Turbitt (Sensas Wibsey) 2-14-0.

Teams: Sensas Wibsey 49; Hirst Tackle 48; Leeds Angling Centre 46; Glen 42.

League: Sensas Wibsey 5; Hirst Tackle 7; Leeds Angling Centre 14; Glen 17.

Maggot fished at short range put Lee Bramham at the top of the frame on another well-attended Langwith event on Sunday.

Drawn at peg 20 on Emma’s Lake, he was into fish straight away and kept them interested until the end, by which time he had 65lb 14oz safely tucked away in his net.

Top on Bethany’s Lake and second overall was Chris Reilly who took the far bank option with maggot and ended the day with 60lb 8oz of carp to three pounds.
