FRIENDS and family of a courageous York mum who has terminal cancer came together for a glittering ball to raise money for the charities who continue to support her.

Hannah Dyke, 35, who has two children aged six and two, was diagnosed with breast cancer in February and doctors say the cancer is now very advanced.

Both Macmillan Cancer and St Leonard’s Hospice have supported her, and Hannah and her husband, Ben, both from Acomb, wanted to raise funds.

Hannah said: “It is also a massive thank you to all my friends and family who have supported me over the past few months. There have been meal rotas, cleaning rotas, people have looked after the children and so much more.

“I get lots of encouragement through the Facebook group called ‘I am believing for Hannah’s healing’, which has nearly 700 members, praying for me and supporting me. I believe in Jesus and know that full healing will happen, either on earth or when I am in Heaven.”

The event, at the Spurriergate Centre in York, raised more than £2,000 for the charities, through ticket sales, a raffle, an auction and donations.

One of the guests, Donna Newman, said: “I have been amazed by the generous donations from local companies for Hannah’s ball. Everyone is encouraged by this inspirational lady.”

Another, Clare Mulrooney, said it was “an incredible night of good food, wine, music, dancing, friendship, laughter and tears with a completely inspiring, brave and courageous lady at the centre”.

Hannah Smith, a friend who organised the ball, said: “The whole evening went without a hitch, the place looked beautiful and we couldn’t have done it without the team of people who came on the night just to serve food, wash dishes and generally get stuck in.”

Donations for the event, which was held on November 7, came from a range of local companies including Burgins Purfumery, Bettys Tearoom, Innovations Hair Salon in Boroughbridge Road, Vida Hairdressing, Jasmines Beauty Salon in Acomb, Nestlé, Kennedy’s Bar and Restaurant in Little Stonegate, and various other local shops, artists, supermarkets and gyms. Yorkvale ice cream also donated ice-cream for everybody.
