A SPECTACULAR new light show has turned the National Railway Museum’s famous turn table into a stunning piece of modern art.

Entitled Brief Encounters, the light installation has been inspired by the museum’s collection and is said to examine the relationship between time and distance.

One of the artists involved with the project, Kit Monkman, said it needs to be seen to be believed.

He said: “Brief Encounters is so unique and so unlike anything you’ll have ever seen before, that it’s difficult to imagine it without seeing it for yourself.”

The show is on from now until January 3 and admission is free.

Meanwhile, the Tornado, the first new main line steam locomotive to be built in Britain for almost 50 years, was in York yesterday and will be again today.

The Tornado is operating the Cathedrals Express from London’s King’s Cross and will arrive in York at 1.19pm today. It will leave York to head back to London at 5.11pm.

Mark Allatt, chairman of The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust which built the engine said: “After a busy couple of months away from the East Coast Main Line it will be good to take Tornado back to York again with The Cathedrals Express on the route that she was designed for.”
