TEN York-based soldiers will be taking part in a 20-mile cross country night race this weekend in a bid to raise about £1,000 for charity.

The soldiers, from 2 Signal Regiment, based at Imphal Barracks, in Fulford Road, will be participating in the event in the Brecon Beacons, in aid of Help For Heroes, which was formed to help service personnel wounded in Britain’s current conflicts.

To assist the soldiers in their challenge, Darren Bilton, of Up & Running, in Fossgate, York, gave them running vests, running trainers and energy bars.

Signaller Michael Perkins, 28, is one of the ten soldiers who will be taking part in the race on Saturday.

He said: “It’s going to be fun, but it’s going to be an experience because it’s a distance I and most of us have never run before.
