Regarding Ann Chelton’s letter entitled Biblical puzzles (November 3), it is very good when one reads the Bible for oneself.

Often one finds that what we have been taught in sermons etc, is not necessarily correct, and often are the teachings and traditions of men, just as Jesus said in Mark’s Gospel (Chapter 7:8-9).

Ms Chelton, like many others, has found that studying the Bible for oneself brings freedom. Jesus said: “You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free (John 8:32).”

As for the teaching that priests must remain single, this is of course totally unbiblical, as pointed out by Ms Chelton.

The verse mentioned regarding the “unmarried man being anxious for the things of the Lord” is showing that it his choice to remain single so he may concentrate his life on the ministry God has given him. For many priests and vicars this is their decision, but not all. When they are forbidden to marry, this is going against God’s order for man.

Therefore priests of any persuasion should not be denied marriage and family.
