A GUTSY display from York Schoolboys Under-13 footballers prised a share of the spoils from an outing against their East Riding hosts, whose ranks were packed with Hull City Academy players.

Chances were few and far between as the strong defences of both teams managed to snub any forays.

East Riding eventually got on top and the breakthrough came near the end of the first half as the hosts’ tall centre-half glided on a mazy run past six York players before sliding the ball past York goalkeeper James Todd.

In reply, Dylan Howlett, Adam Swords and Tom Barnes all went close before half-time.

After the break changes were made and man-of-the-match Jacob Rose started to exert more of a pivotal influence.

Harry Lynne in defence was outstanding as he, Nige Holland, Joe Ferguson and Henry Swires thwarted the East Riding attacks.

Jack Torrence and Joe Sykes dominated central midfield and Kieran Smith was surging down the right wing.

The equaliser finally came from Rose who slotted the ball in after dribbling past three home defenders.

York continued to press and, with minutes remaining, Dylan Howlett was put through with only the ’keeper to beat, but his curled shot scraped against a post before squirting away to safety.

East Riding had one more chance of their own but Todd made another great save to ensure parity.

York are next in action today against Hartlepool in a National ESFA Cup second round tie.
