YORK City juniors failed to rack up an eighth consecutive league victory when visitors Chesterfield snatched a 3-2 win at Wigginton Road.

The Minstermites, who led twice through Nick Thompson and Kingsley Wetherald goals, also surrendered top spot in the Puma Youth Alliance North-East Conference table to Hull City.

Steve Torpey’s teenagers started the game in bright fashion with Tom Richardson’s looping header hitting the bar before Thompson marked his return from injury with a well-taken goal after a smart one-two with Wetherald.

Jed Vale was then denied by a save that brought back shades of Gordon Banks before City ’keeper James Field was unable to hold on to an 18-yard drive as Chesterfield drew level.

The home side reacted well and regained the lead through Wetherald.

Jamie Hopcutt created a yard of space and whipped in a great cross that the Spireites ’keeper could only palm into the path of Wetherald, who smashed in his sixth goal in four games.

Early in the second half, a powerful Wetherald effort struck the outside of a post and Thompson was denied a second goal by an outstanding save.

In a mad ten minutes, the game turned on its head with a Chesterfield equaliser coming after a lack of communication between goalkeeper and defence led to a corner.

York allowed the visitors far too much space and the ball was volleyed home.

Another set-piece sealed City’s fate when the ball was flicked on at the near post for an an accomplished volley from a visiting centre-back.
