RIVALS York RUFC Under-11s and Malton & Norton claimed one win apiece from their Clifton Park derby clashes.

York ‘A’ won the opening game 15-5, but the Ryedale side hit back to beat York ‘B’ 30-0 in the second encounter.

The ‘A’ team stormed into a two try lead early in the opening game, while Malt’s Benedict Fawcett was unlucky to knock-on as he crashed over the try line.

The visitors looked vulnerable to the counter-attack and York scored a third just before half-time.

Malton started the second half brightly, with Harry Butler, Henry Browne, Toby Wrightson and Jamie Knaggs keeping the ball tight.

A mighty effort from a scrum saw Jack Charters cross the line, but he wasn’t able to ground the ball.

From the subsequent scrum, Fawcett was able to squeeze through the defensive line and score.

No conversions were attempted in the atrocious weather conditions.

The second game was a triumph for Malton’s outstanding handling of a wet ball in close play.

Browne scored the opening try from an excellent set-up by Owen Hayhurst and, from the restart, Malton took the ball into a flowing maul that went through several pairs of hands before Butler grounded the ball.

In the second half, the teams were changed to ten-a-side which made for a more open style and Will Fordy was quickly on the scoresheet after a lovely backline move.

Hayhurst created the fourth after he forced a fumble from a poorly-taken York penalty and took the ball over himself, and then Fawcett and Pycock combined wonderfully for Fawcett to cross for the fifth score.

The final try was scored by Knaggs after a lineout take and a ten-metre charge to the line.
