York Acorn ARLC Under-14s bowed out of the Yorkshire Cup with a 16-6 defeat to Dewsbury Moor.

Both teams found it difficult in the strong wind and pouring rain and mistakes were plentiful, but the conditions suited the big Dewsbury side better.

The introduction of substitute forward Charlie Settle saw Acorn get on top after falling 6-0 behind and Jarrod Smith dived onto Harry Bromwich’s grubber kick to score, Liam Lowson goaling.

Acorn had a try cruelly disallowed before the big Dewsbury pack gradually got on top in the second half.

Ashley Robson and Lowson never stopped trying for Acorn, whose man of the match was Settle.

New Earswick All Blacks U12s won a tight thriller 9-8 against Milford – two Tom Wilson tries and a George Leatt drop goal proving decisive.

With both defences holding strong, the game was tense right to the end.

Impressive hooker Wilson, who won the ‘outstanding effort award’, opened the scoring when crashing over from acting-half, and it was when the scores were locked at 4-4 after half-time that Leatt kicked his one-pointer to edge his side ahead.

After holding Milford out for large parts of the second half, All Blacks went further in front when Wilson stretched out for another close-range try.

Milford pulled a try back but All Blacks held on. Hard-working full-back Luke Adamson was man of the match and prop George Wallace the opposition coach’s man of the match, while Kieran Hamilton won the ‘excellent in defence’ award and Nick Surtees the ‘excellent in attack’ accolade. Will Ireland and Connor Iddon also impressed.

York Acorn U11s continued their winning ways with a 24-12 defeat of Churwell Chiefs.

Man-of-the-match Reece Maynard opened the scoring with a try and goal, and his long pass saw strong running Thomas Atkin, the joint top tackler alongside Owen Levers, go over.

Churwell hit back to lead 12-10 at half-time but Jack Wyard, the coaches’ player of the match, gained plenty of ground as Acorn regained the ascendancy.

Wyard scored, Charlie Dickinson converting, and Maynard got his second before moving the ball about for Aarron Machin to touch down his first try for the club.

Prop Cain North’s mighty performance was not enough to preserve Heworth U10s’ six-game winning start as they somehow lost 18-14 to Crigglestone All Blacks.

Man-of-the-match North was ably backed by Leon Beattie, who scored one of three first-half tries, and Arron McBride, who regularly broke the line.

Stand-off Sam Young, the opponent’s choice of man of the match, was also a constant threat, eventually scoring a try and goal, while Josh Rogerson scored for the seventh straight game and was twice held up short.

Jack Shore and Kieran Costanzos shared the top tackler award and Andrew Errington was the most improved player.

A below-par performance saw New Earswick U10s lose 24-16 to Churwell Chiefs.

All Blacks’ points came from Jimmy Piggott, Joe Crampton and Josh Ireland with Harry Suter and Harvey Bayns each adding a conversion.

The men of the match were James Mahon and Daniel Watson, the most improved player was Tom Noble, and Ewen Coverdale was voted team player.

Jake Wright was man of the match in York Acorn U10s’ game with Featherstone Lions, while Reece Stephens was the coach’s man of the match and Cameron Rostrum the most improved player.

Kian Oliver scored New Earswick All Blacks U8s’ only try in an excellent game against the unbeaten Hunslet Warriors.

Austin Cole was the man of the match, new boy Callum Walton had a fine debut and took the rising star award, and Oliver was the opposition’s choice of top performer.
