THE Buble is yet to burst. However, the phenomenal resurrection of the Great American Songbook, from the likes of Buble, Rod Stewart and Babs Streisand has resulted in a shortfall of standards yet to be covered.

Crazy Love sets out to push the boundaries on the classics and introduce new songs. Don’t expect standard colour-by-numbers versions of the classics. In particular, Julie London’s Cry Me A River has been given a radical, almost Wagner-esque makeover. Although the treatment is clever, any last scrap of emotional integrity has been sandblasted away in the process.

More convincing are the big band makeovers of The Eagles’ Heartache Tonight, Van Morrison’s Crazy Love and an interesting cover of Whatever It Takes, by Ron Sexsmith, who appears as a guest artist on his own song.

Purists who want their big band classics left in aspic may not warm to Crazy Love, but this collection crosses new frontiers.
