COOL, great music was the avowed aim of Iain McCulloch, the Bunnymen’s leader who oozed style, substance and star quality. In the 1980s, McCulloch was the coolest around and so were his original line-up.

Diamond hits such as The Cutter, The Killing Moon and The Back Of Love amplify such exalted status. Now McCulloch and new bunnies – original guitarist Will Sergeant remains – are back with an album that, while only touching the hem of classic Ocean Rain shows they are far from a spent force. Of the ten tracks only two towards the end could be labelled filler.

The rest ripple with sonic gold such as the title track, the self-deprecating Do You Know Who I Am and Proxy and the touching The Idleness Of Gods. McCulloch’s voice has lost its graceful wail but remains the most searing Scouse rock weapon since John Winston Lennon, while Sergeant’s sublime guitar divinely chimes. Still tundra cool.
