THOUSANDS of people celebrated Bonfire Night in the home city of Gunpowder Plotter Guy Fawkes.
Displays went on well into the chilly but dry evening, providing perfect conditions for people to enjoy the events on offer.
The bonfire and fireworks display at York Maze had sold out days before, and saw 3,000 people turn up at the Elvington venue to enjoy fire jugglers, a giant bonfire and a “fireworks spectacular” which was set to music.
The evening was rounded off with a performance by York band Huge.
Elsewhere, Gordon Watkins, landlord of Bishopthorpe’s Ebor Inn, said its display had been one of the best yet. “We have had a fantastic firework display and bonfire. Hundreds of villagers have turned out. We had tombolas and raffles and we think we have raised £1,000 for good causes,” he said.
Villagers in Poppleton also gathered to enjoy fireworks, live music, dancing and food at the display held at the Poppleton Centre.
Nine-year-old Jack Atkinson said: “We always go to this one. It was better than last year. It was a lot more exciting.”
Police, ambulance and fire services all reported a quiet evening.
