THE paintings of William Etty (1787-1849) are to be found in art galleries throughout the world, yet his work is little appreciated in his own county of Yorkshire.
The recent biography by Leonard Robinson, William Etty: The Life And Art, has done much to remind art lovers of Etty’s remarkable achievement, and the exhibition of his paintings at York Art Gallery planned for 2011 will bring knowledge of his paintings to a wider public.
Etty was also a compulsive correspondent. His letters give an insight into the artistic life and social mores of the early 19th century. He counted among his friends Constable, Landseer, Wilkie Collins and many of the rich and successful men of the age.
York Library Service holds the largest collection of Etty’s letters still existing. The Etty Project aims to scan, transcribe, annotate and catalogue the entire collection of 626 documents. Full details of the Project may be found by visiting Yorkwatch.com
