Let there be a speedy decision to get on with building extra car parking for York Hospital.

The writer in The Press on October 14 who strongly disapproves (Don’t back car park “madness”) may wish to consider the following points of view.

Several hundred cars parked in a new multi-storey car park with engines stilled will create much less exhaust fumes than a similar number with engines running waiting for a space in the present inadequate car park, plus others also delayed by the congestion. This would go along way to reducing pollution in that area.

A little research will show that there is already a frequent bus service to and from the hospital, with little room for more. Practically every “ex-car” visitor, would need to use either a bus or train, changing more than once and also making connections with each service used, since they come from far and wide in the York area. Imagine the extended journey time and returning home by the same method – hardly practical.

In fact, cars, taxis, etc, are essential for those unfortunate enough to use the hospital services. Alleged global warming should at least become a secondary concern in this case.

It has long been accepted that a multi-storied car cark would help to solve the traffic needs to and from the hospital. If the planners were to permit a “concrete box” in front of the hospital, hopefully it would blend in with its present “concrete” buildings.
