ONE of Britain’s most historic naval victories was marked in York with two Trafalgar Day parades.

About 60 Sea Cadets from York, Filey, Scarborough and Hull, marched through the city to music from the York unit Sea Cadet band to celebrate this week’s 204th anniversary of Nelson’s victory over Napoleon. They set off from the Eye of York and paraded through the city centre, where hundreds of people lined the streets to watch the spectacle.

After a service in the Quire of York Minster, the Lord Mayor of York, Coun John Galvin, and Air Commodore William Gambold took the salute on the Mansion House steps.

Lieutenant Caroline Meek, commanding officer of the York Sea Cadets, said: “It was really great to see the cadets march through the city.”

Meanwhile, members of the York branches of the Royal Naval Association and Royal Marines Association held a service at All Saints’ Church, in Pavement. They then marched past the Mansion House, where the salute was again taken by Coun Galvin.
