VETERANS of the Falklands War were at a museum near York to talk about their experiences as pilots in the conflict.

Martin Withers, of Easingwold, who flew the Vulcan Bomber that dropped bombs on Port Stanley airfield, and Barry Neale, from Devon, a Victor K2 Tanker pilot, were at the Yorkshire Air Museum in Elvington on Saturday.

Together with other V Force, Chinook and fast jet veterans, they took part in a question and answer session and signed memorabilia for museum visitors. Then, yesterday, the museum played host to its annual Thunder Day, when more than 1,000 people gathered to catch the rare sight of a Handley Page Victor making a spectacular dash down the runway.

The aircraft, which is affectionately known as Lusty Lindy, served on the legendary Black Buck raids on Port Stanley, as a refuelling tanker for the Vulcan Bombers.

Ian Richardson, a spokesman for the museum, said: “We’ve had two fantastic days. The lecture on Saturday was very well received and the crowd really enjoyed the live engine run on Sunday.”

Other activities during the day included a display by the museum’s fire team, who gave children the chance to have a go with their hoses and try to knock down a bollard.

The Blackburn Buccaneer was also powered up on the museum site, giving visitors the opportunity to see and hear the aircraft at close quarters.
