THE name of a York soldier was read out during Prime Minister's Question Time as Gordon Brown listed all those killed in Afghanistan during Parliament’s summer recess.

In total, Mr Brown read out 37 names yesterday on behalf of all political parties.

He said the name of 23-year-old Lance Bombardier Matt Hatton, of Haxby, along with the names of the others killed over the summer, would “never be forgotten”.

He said: “I think it’s right that we should pause to pay respects to the members of our armed forces who have given their lives on behalf of their country in Afghanistan.

“This is a solemn moment for this house and for the country.

“It is a day in which we put on record in the House of Commons our gratitude and our commemoration of the sacrifice, made by 37 of our armed forces.”

Mr Brown went on to say nothing could be greater than the pride the House of Commons takes in the armed services’ contribution to Britain. The tribute came on the same day that plans were announced to send 500 more troops to Afghanistan.

Lance Bombardier Hatton, of the 40 Regiment Royal Artillery, was killed on August 13 while on foot patrol in the Sangin area of Helmand province.
