Children in York put their recycling knowledge to the test in a green-minded competition to find the best ways to reduce, reuse and recycle waste.

Primary schools across York and North Yorkshire were encouraged to design the best A3 posters, illustrating ways to reuse and recycle waste generated at home. Eight winners were chosen, and Connor Easton, from Lakeside Primary School, at Clifton Moor, came first in York.

Each of the winning schools in York and North Yorkshire will receive a school prize of a wormery composter. The individual winner receives a “worm world” for observing worms at home.

The competition was organised by City of York Council and York and North Yorkshire Waste Partnership Elizabeth Parker, the council’s waste strategy officer, said: “Many children are already aware that they can start to make a real difference in reducing waste with very simple actions, from reusing plastic bottles to cutting down food waste.

“The poster designs we received demonstrated some wonderful ideas, practical tips and really creative designs. They show that we can all learn a thing or two from children when it comes to generating less waste.”

A selection of entries, including the winning design, are currently on display at York’s Guildhall.
