VANDALS have been accused of putting bikers’ safety at risk, by repeatedly removing bollards on a chicane in York.

Yobs in Woodthorpe have broken numerous bollards at the corner of Ashbourne Way and Rycroft Avenue, to the dismay of locals.

Coun Tom Holvey said the bollards were put up to mark a chicane as part of a road safety scheme for Woodthorpe Primary School, and said the chicane could otherwise be missed.

He said: “The bollard used to be a normal square one, but it kept being detached and thrown into people’s gardens so we replaced it with a new vandal proof one a few months ago.

“Despite being vandal proof, the kids of Woodthorpe have taken it to task and have now removed the third bollard. It generally takes about two months of attacks to finally break each one and there’s not much we can do as we just have to keep replacing it.”

The old bollards were £80 each and the new ones £350.

Coun Holvey said the vandalism was a danger to motorcyclists and pedestrians, as there was a danger a biker or driver could misjudge the road.
