A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy has been appointed “Director of Fun” at York’s National Railway Museum after applying to be the new museum chief.

Staff at the museum were startled when they received a letter from Sam Pointon, saying: “I am only six, but I think I can do this job.”

Sam explained he was perfect for the role as he had been on lots of trains, had visited the museum, and owned an electric train track on which he could control two trains at once.

A museum spokeswoman said that when Andrew Scott announced his retirement as director of the museum, staff had always anticipated the position would be highly sought-after. “However, it wasn’t foreseen that one of the most memorable applications for the position would be that of six-year old Sam.”

She said museum bosses were so touched by his enthusiasm and determination that they decided to appoint him Director Of Fun. His job will now be to tell them how he thinks they can ensure the NRM is the most fun place for kids to spend a day out.

In return, Sam was invited to spend a VIP day out at the museum with his family, including a special behind-the-scenes tour of the workshop to get a close up view of the steam icon, Flying Scotsman, as she is restored, along with tickets to see the smash hit production of The Railway Children at the museum.

Sam’s father, Robin Pointon, of Leicester, said: “Sam was absolutely delighted when he received the letter appointing him. He has always been a huge fan of trains so obviously the NRM has always been his number one choice for a day out.”

Mr Scott said: “Sam’s letter of application was a real delight to read. It’s always fantastic to see such young children with a real passion for trains just like I had when I was a boy.”
