PLANS to reopen an historic East Riding rail link to York have won the seal of approval from East Riding Council.
The Minsters Rail Campaign, which affects Pocklington, Market Weighton and Stamford Bridge, has been given the backing of East Riding Council’s cabinet.
The aim is to have a rail link running from York to Beverley, incorporating stops at towns and villages along the route.
In late 2008, the Government invited all of the country’s local authorities to identify projects which would improve the sustainability of local communities.
The Minsters Rail Campaign proposals came out top in the East Riding’s submission.
They will now be discussed at the Local Government Association (LGA) in London.
Chairman of the Minsters Rail Campaign and former Pocklington mayor George McManus said: “This is fabulous news.
“We’ve said for a long time that our plans tick a lot of boxes.
“This report highlights the real benefits of our plans, protecting the environment, growing the economy and saving lives.
“We will now lobby the LGA and the Government to have this listed as a national priority.
“East Riding Council is to be congratulated for showing the sort of vision that will be needed for the long-term development of a prosperous, greener and safer East Riding.”
