RI AMATEURS bowler Paul Humphries has been rewarded for steering Yorkshire to success in the Middleton Cup.

Skip Humphries led his rink to a 29-16 win against Northumberland as the white rose county won 125-107 at Dunnington.

And the York player’s good showing earned him a place in the Yorkshire double fours team to take on Cumbria on Sunday.

Humphries will join Dunnington’s Mark Clarke in Nigel Brignall’s rink, while Mark Walton will keep his all-Nafferton rink for the match at Cornfield Road, Middlesbrough, which starts at 10am.

The winners of that tie will take on Lincolnshire or Lancashire at 2pm.

Meanwhile, Yorkshire will take on Cumbria in the Armstrong Cup at Selby on Saturday, starting at 2pm.

North Yorkshire players taking part include K Nelson (Poppleton Road WMC), R Tiplady (Hull Road Park), B Waldie (Nestlé Rowntree), R Williamson (Holgate) and L Waley (Stewart).

The Yorkshire singles competition has reached the quarter-final stages.

The following ties will be played at Kirkbymoorside today: S Kelly (Kingston) v V O’Neill (Middlesbrough), T Winter (West Park) v A Longfield (Selby), S Dilks (Nafferton) v A W Jones (Locke Park), B Render (Nafferton) v J Whiteley (Selby).

Meanwhile, Selby and RI Amateurs both won 8-0 to maintain their rivalry at the top of division one in the York Amateur Bowling Association League.

Selby beat Clifton and Amateurs toppled Bootham in the latest round of fixtures.

Hull Road Park’s 7-1 victory at RI Corinthians has lifted them out of the bottom two, giving them hope of avoiding relegation.

In division two, Holgate’s good form continued with an 8-0 victory against Stamford Bridge, which moved them into second place.

They are seven points behind Nestlé Rowntree but have the advantage of a game in hand.

Division three leaders Minster suffered defeats against University, going down 7-1, and Retreat, losing 6-2.

As a result, they have been joined at the top by Copmanthorpe and Retreat, all on 43 points after two losses apiece.
