I am appalled to learn that York Minster is suddenly making employees redundant (32 Minster staff face redundancy, The Press, May 14).

It is ironic how the so-called “Christian mission” of the Church is now called into question, in promising to reach out to the community in a time of economic turmoil, and yet it has so coldly forgotten the people who have worked closely in the heart of the family of the cathedral without looking back.

Many of these employees have families and some have worked at the Minster half their lifetime, and receive this thanks and blessing from the Church in return. How Christian. The Minster is at the very centre of the community of York and this will have devastating effects on this tight community.

I think people should be aware of what is really going on in the Christian Church today. I wonder at the wage of the Dean and his clergy, with no mortgage. How can we trust and have faith in such an institution at the revelation of such shocking events?
