IN-FORM York Schoolboys Under-11s have ended the Yorkshire League season with a 100 per cent record for the first time.

The Minster city youngsters closed out their campaign with a 2-1 win over West Yorkshire rivals Leeds.

The game doubled up as a League Cup semi-final and York will play Spen Valley in the final at Pocklington Town FC today.

The victory was no more than York deserved in a game where they created the better goalscoring chances.

York pushed forward from the start and Josh Nelson delivered several crosses, which the forward pairing of Matt Fisher and Kwame Norku used to great effect.

The midfield unit of Ben Godfrey, Tom Robinson, Joey McCormick and Nelson closed down the opposition at every opportunity, while the defence was well marshalled by the excellent Ben Hirst and Liam Neal.

It was, however, the West Yorkshire side who took the lead when a mistimed challenge in the penalty area gifted them a spot kick.

Despite ’keeper Charlie Murphy’s best efforts, the Leeds forward confidently put his team ahead.

However, York responded in the best possible way. From the kick off, McCormick went on a trademark run down the left, beating several defenders before crossing superbly for Fisher to bundle the ball over the line.

With York in the ascendancy, further goals looked imminent, but honours were even at the break.

York continued where they left off in the second period and, after Fisher lobbed the Leeds ’keeper, Norku was on hand to force the ball over the line.

York then made changes which saw Jake Wright introduced into the midfield to stifle the Leeds passing game – and the ploy was effective as York comfortably saw out the game to claim a victory they fully deserved.

Coach Ian Hutchinson said: “I am delighted for the boys, who stuck to our game plan of closing Leeds down quickly and fully utilising the wide areas to deliver some quality crosses.

“As it has throughout the season, our defence appeared watertight with Liam Neal, Ben Hirst, Myles Frodsham and Matty Mulhearn quelling any potential raids.

“The midfield worked tirelessly throughout, with Ben Godfrey, Tom Robinson, Jake Wright, Sam Mortimer, Sam Backhouse, Joe Wales and Joey McCormick all putting in some excellent work.

“I hope we can take this performance into our final match of an unforgettable season against an improved Spen Valley team in the League Cup final.”
