RECORDED in the far north of Norway, Blood From A Stone is certainly a departure. Hukkelberg has gained a cultish (and presumably chilly) fan club for her leftfield records, which have drawn comparisons to almost any well-known Nordic singer.

Hunkering down in the Arctic has done her good, as this record has potential and her individual approach to percussion (mostly kitchen hardware with the occasional bicycle spoke thrown in) has been harnessed to meet the needs of the song, not simply for eccentricity’s sake.

It does lack standout tunes, although Seventeen is mainstream by Hukkelberg’s standards, and those wishing to sample her “let’s play an oven and a freezer” approach should head for Salt of The Earth. The main draw here is the lyrics, filtered through a Norwegian worldview, which are consistently interesting – and mark Hukkelberg as a name to remember for those with a hankering in this direction.
