A BALD biker from York has pledged to dye his goatee a different colour every month for one year in return for donations to charity.

Trevor Martin, of Tang Hall, will give all the cash to the new Guardian Angels high-dependency unit for children at York Hospital.

It was Father Tim Jones, the priest at St Laurence’s Church, in York, who encouraged Trevor to perform the stunt.

“I decided to dye my goatee purple for a motorcycle rally and when Father Jones saw it last Sunday, he asked me if I’d done it for charity,” said the 52-year-old.

“I hadn’t even thought of that – it’s just something that bikers do – but he said to me that if I let him take a photo on his mobile phone, he would donate a fiver for a charity of my choice.

“That got me thinking, and I decided that I would dye my goatee a different colour every month for charity. I think there are about 12 different colours I can use – so that’s about a year.”

Parishioners at St Laurence’s Church, where Trevor is a member of the parochial church council, have been given the responsibility of choosing the colour every month.

“My wife thinks I’m only doing it because I’m bald, but Guardian Angels is a really worthwhile cause to support,” he said.

“It is really important that York Hospital has the necessary facilities so children are able to stay in York for their treatment.”

Trevor, a father-of-six and former taxi driver, is a full-time carer for his wife, Jackie, who suffers from chronic asthma and is registered disabled.

If you would like to sponsor him, send cheques made out to Guardian Angels York to Trevor Martin, 62 Etty Avenue, York, YO10 3TL.

Dozens of children, suffering from conditions such as meningitis and respiratory problems, have been treated in the unit since it opened last August.

It was funded entirely by The Press’s Guardian Angels Appeal, which reached its £300,000 target last October. The appeal has now been given official charity status to enable fundraising to continue to help with the upkeep of the unit.
