A SERIES of excellent angling contests were seen on York waters this week.

At Carpvale, Bob-Co’s Dave Wright topped round nine of the Bob-Co Spring League with 85lb 2oz.

Topping the charts from peg two on Cyprio, he offered corn tight to the corner on his left.

Despite losing some big fish to their snaggy lair, he hauled out some lumps to 12lb.

Graham Broadley, also of Bob-Co, took second from peg 12 on the same lake, where he offered meat and cat meat at 12 metres into open water for a mixed net of carp and tench to 5lb.

Top dog on the Match Lake was Steve Sharples (Bob-Co), who netted 45 carp on pellet and corn at 16 metres from peg 33 for his level 74lb.

Ripon’s John Fletcher maintained his grasp on the league with another excellent performance. His 50lb 9oz secured sixth place and another section win. Carpvale also hosted Harrogate Nomads on the Front Pond.

Martin Dodsworth led from peg 65 where he offered bread on the surface and popped up above a cage feeder for a steady stream of carp to 4lb in his 145lb 8oz total.

John Brain was the other centurion with 110lb.

A Bob-Co event on Cyprio Pool saw John Haw take the honours from peg one.

Offering pole and meat to the island, the Acomb Tackle man hauled out 96lb 4oz of carp to 7lb.

His nearest challengers were Andy Gallant, who netted 78lb 14oz from peg 12, and Dave Scratchard, who helped himself to 77lb 12oz off peg six.

In a close finish at Oak Tree Leisure, Gary Pawlett just did enough to win with his 50lb 4oz net of carp.

Using pellet and caster at ten metres off a peg five draw, Pawlett added to his impressive list of results with a bag of carp to 7lbs.

A fish behind was Kev Gilligan, who opted for cat meat and corn on the long pole at peg 33 for 48lb 8oz of barbel to 4lb, plus a very lively 17lb grass carp.

Result: 1 Gary Pawlett, Oak Tree Leisure, 50-4-0; 2 Kev Gilligan, Oak Tree Leisure, 48-8-0; 3 Paul Cromie, Oak Tree Leisure, 44-0-0; 4 Ray Orr, Oak Tree Leisure, 35-0-0; 5 Steph Armitage, Team Glum, 31-4-0; 6 Mel Sykes, Oak Tree Leisure, 27-0-0.

• The new York Amalgamation website continues to expand, with a historical records section being set up. Any angler, or tackle shop, with information that may be useful is asked to write to the secretary with details. Match results and other information can be submitted for inclusion on the site. Anglers who have memories of Chapman’s Pond in Dringhouses, the access around it and the quality of the fishing, are also being asked to let the secretary have details.

• Several anglers have recently been seeking clarification over the rules regarding fishing for trout on rivers during the coarse fish close season.

If you are fishing for trout, and trout only, then fishing is allowed on the designated trout rivers, such the Rye, Ouse, Nidd, the Derwent and Barton Hill Beck.

You must be seen to be fishing for trout only, using natural or artificial fly, artificial lure, worm or minnow.

If seen using a method that would catch coarse fish then you would be committing an offence. If catching coarse fish while fishing for trout then you must either leave the water, move to another spot or change your method. Continuation of fishing and catching coarse fish will result in a prosecution.

Fishing in the close season is, of course allowed on stillwaters or canals only if one is in possession of an Environment Agency rod licence.

Fisk brisk to bag Langwith victory

Emma’s Lake proved to be the hot draw at Langwith and, from peg 19, Ben Fisk got back to winning ways with a solid 107lb 14oz as pellet did the business.

Working across to the island at 13 metres the Middy backed angler found carp to 3lbs.

The nearest chaser was United Baits’ Dave Cheetham, who offered his pellets at half width at peg 17 to bag 73lb.
