THREE could be the magic number for Simon Dyson as he relaunches his drive for success on the European Golf Tour.

After two weeks out through injury, the 31-year-old North Yorkshire ace takes to The 3 Irish Open tomorrow, looking forward to getting back in the groove.

And key to his recovery from a neck injury which has blighted his last six weeks of the European Tour Race to Dubai circuit has been a trio of cortisone injections into affected area.

Explained Dyson: “I went to see a specialist and had an MRI scan. It showed that there was a worn disc in the neck. But the good news is there was no damage to the tendons and muscles so I was given the three injections because the neck was a bit inflamed.”

Told not to pick up a golf club of any kind, Dyson has upped his regime starting with hitting a series of drives to hone his condition to compete in Ireland.

“I started hitting something like 50 balls, but only off a three-quarter shot,” said Dyson before jetting out to County Louth.

“The neck was giving me a bit of pain, but nothing like it has done, and I feel things are improving. It’s just a big relief the injury is not too serious. Now I’m just looking forward to getting back to being competitive again.”

In spite of the neck injury, the Malton and Norton GC star has still missed only one cut out of the dozen tournaments he has competed in this year.

Dyson’s enforced absence – he has missed both the Spanish and Italian Opens this past fortnight – means he has dropped to 52nd in the European Race to Dubai. The leading 60 at the end of the season advance to the $10 million Dubai Championship in November.

Dyson has also fallen one place out of the world’s leading 120-ranked players so will be seeking a solid performance at the Baltray Golf Club, a new venue for the Irish Open, which carries a prize fund of more than £2 million.
