MORE shop windows throughout the city are being decorated in a huge show of support for the Minstermen ahead of their big day at Wembley next month.

The Press wants to see as many shop fronts as possible adorned in York City’s red, white and blue, in the run up to the Wembley clash with Stevenage Borough on May 9.

If showing your support is not motivation enough, the prize of a five-day holiday in Exmouth, courtesy of travel company Shearings, is up for grabs to the creator of the best display.

We are asking York retailers which sell our newspaper to get a dose of Wembley fever and join our quest to find the best York City Goes To Wembley window display – with our readers deciding which one scores highest.

William Betteridge, of Eastholme Drive Newsagents, is one of those flying the flag for Minstermen boss Martin Foyle’s boys.

He said: “Lots of my customers support York City and the club is a very important part of York.

“This is a chance for the people of York to support their team.

“It’s not often your team gets to Wembley, even if you are a supporter of a Premiership club, and this is the best opportunity people in York have got for getting to the national stadium – and it’s a great day out.

He said: “It’s important for York because their season has been absolutely pants. They have only escaped obscurity by the skin of their teeth and this is good day out for them.”

Fellow shopkeeper, Nick Jeffery, of Wigginton Village Stores, said: “This is about supporting local football.”

Pictures of participating retailers’ displays will then be featured in The Press and readers will have the chance to pick which one they think is top of the league through a text vote.

The winner will then be chosen from the featured nominees and, in the event of a tie, the editor’s decision is final. Photographs of entries are being taken and the closing date for participants is noon on Friday, May 8.

The winner will be announced on Monday, May 11 – by which time City hope to have tasted Wembley success.

As well as the window display contest, The Press will also be running numerous competitions and reader offers in the run-up to Wembley, including a special commemorative supplement on Saturday.
