EDEN Camp near Malton welcomed 200 wartime veterans from around the world who gathered to remember their lost comrades.
The veterans, all members of the Escape Line Memorial Society (ELMS), met at the museum on Saturday to lay wreaths in memory of the civilians who helped prisoners of war to escape safely to their own lines during the Second World War.
Eden Camp was chosen four years ago to be the home of the ELMS official memorial, and it was there that the veterans gathered to lay wreaths.
Museum director Nick Hill said: “They come back here every year in memory of their comrades who didn’t make it back, and the civilians who helped those who did get away.
“It’s quite a unique event because the people who come along did a little extra. They are real heroes and we are honoured to have their national memorial on the site and that they deemed it the most appropriate place to put it.”
